Theme this week
Revenue can rise even as visits, patients, and invoices fall. This week, teams should test visit assumptions and set clear steps for work that may create client questions or delays: refills, screwworm calls, vaccine and flea-product stocking, artificial intelligence (AI) note review, and insurance intake.
Executive takeaways
- Compare visits, invoices, patients, revenue, and gross margin weekly. Revenue can rise while client and patient measures fall. 1, 2
- Post a screwworm reception script this week. Reception and medical teams need clear first steps before suspected cases or travel questions rise. 4, 5
- Review chronic medication and prescription diet records this month. Check last fill source and next refill date before changing refill plans. 6, 7, 8
- Review vaccine and nitenpyram stocking choices this month. Elanco’s vaccine approval and Felix’s generic nitenpyram approval create ordering, pricing, and staff wording decisions. 10, 12, 13
- Set AI record-review rules within 30 days. Decide who reviews, corrects, and signs AI-generated draft records before rollout. 11
Signals
1. Visit outlook weakens while revenue stays positive
OBSERVED
CATalyst Council released a June 11, 2026, white paper that forecast U.S. clinical visit growth of -2% to 0% through 2030. The report was co-authored by CATalyst Council, Vetsource, Kynetec, and Dedekind Cut Labs. CATalyst said fewer puppy and kitten visits can lower future visit volume. 1
VetWatch reported that year-to-date revenue through the week ending June 13, 2026 was up 2.4% from the prior year across about 3,000 reporting practices. The report also listed clients down 1.9%, invoices down 2.5%, and patients down 2.4%. 2
VIEWPOINT
This changes demand plans. Revenue growth can hide weaker patient flow, lower invoice count, or fewer active clients.
The practical issue is patients, invoices, and product units. Teams should separate price, visit count, patient count, service mix, product costs, and gross margin before changing growth plans.
The PETMETRIX PULSE June 4, 2026 edition (2026-W23) reported the same pattern of revenue rising while traffic measures fell. 3
CONFIDENCE
High — CATalyst published the forecast, and VetWatch published current clinic data. Local causes may vary by market.
ACTIONS
Independent veterinary practices
- Compare visits, invoices, patients, revenue, and gross margin weekly.
- Create a recall list of overdue feline patients before month-end.
Corporate veterinary groups and clinic consolidators
- Break same-site results into price, visits, service mix, and margin by region this month.
- Recheck 2026 same-site visit assumptions before final budgets.
Distributors, e-retail and home delivery providers
- Use order counts and partner visit trends in demand plans this month.
- Compare reorder counts with partner visit data weekly.
Manufacturers and commercial operators
- Rebuild account forecasts using flat or lower visit counts this quarter.
- Compare unit demand with revenue growth by category monthly.
2. New World screwworm adds clinic response work
OBSERVED
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a June 11, 2026, emergency-use authorization for generic nitenpyram tablets for New World screwworm infestations in dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens that weigh at least two pounds and are at least four weeks old. FDA said this was the first generic animal drug authorized for use against New World screwworm. 4
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) published companion-animal guidance on June 12, 2026. The guidance covers recognition and response. It says reporting and sample preservation are critical first steps. It also covers patient handling, client communication, identification, sample collection, treatment, documentation, and biosecurity. AVMA says state and federal directions still apply. 5
VIEWPOINT
Clinics now need a response plan for pets. Clients may ask about travel, wounds, suspected exposure, and product status before any local case appears.
The immediate job is preparation. Teams should know who answers the first call, who checks reporting steps, who handles records, and who reviews product wording.
CONFIDENCE
High — FDA authorization and AVMA guidance are direct sources. Case locations and local reporting steps may change.
ACTIONS
Independent veterinary practices
- Post a reception script for suspected screwworm calls this week.
- Review reporting and sample-preservation steps with the medical lead this week.
Corporate veterinary groups and clinic consolidators
- Standardize suspected-case intake and documentation steps within 30 days.
- Add state animal health contact names and phone numbers for each site this week.
Distributors, e-retail and home delivery providers
- Review screwworm escalation wording for customer service staff this week.
- Check nitenpyram product pages for approved-use wording now.
Manufacturers and commercial operators
- Review screwworm product messages with regulatory teams this week.
- Prepare sales team answers on authorization status and use limits now.
3. Chewy pet health sales make refill tracking more urgent
OBSERVED
Chewy reported first-quarter fiscal year 2026 net sales of $3.36 billion, up 7.7% year over year. It also reported 21.497 million active customers, net sales per active customer of $597, and Autoship customer sales of $2.83 billion. Autoship customer sales were 84.4% of net sales. 6
Chewy’s Form 10-Q says Autoship customer sales include purchases made through Autoship and other purchases by customers with at least one Autoship order shipped during the prior 364 days. The 84.4% figure is a customer-level sales number. Chewy leaves pure automatic-subscription product sales undisclosed. 7
Chewy reported first-quarter pet health and specialty product sales of $562.7 million, up 13.3% year over year. Chewy defines that category as including prescription medications, non-prescription pet health care products, and certain specialty animal products. 7
Chewy completed its Modern Animal acquisition after quarter-end on May 21, 2026. Chewy’s April announcement said the deal would expand Chewy Vet Care from 18 to 47 locations after close. 7, 8
VIEWPOINT
Treat Autoship as a customer-spending measure. Use separate evidence for prescription subscription or refill-compliance claims.
The bigger issue is which company influences where the client goes for the visit, prescription, and refill. Chewy is combining many active customers who keep buying from Chewy, higher spend per active customer, pet health sales growth, pharmacy infrastructure, and expanding Chewy Vet Care clinic network.
Prior reporting in the PETMETRIX PULSE May 21, 2026 edition tracked Chewy’s move toward linking visits, records, prescriptions, pharmacy access, and repeat spend. 9 This week’s update reinforces the point of measuring refill behavior before changing channel plans.
CONFIDENCE
High — Chewy’s financials, Autoship definition, pet health sales, and Modern Animal close are direct. Local refill risk remains unproven because Chewy leaves prescription-only Autoship revenue undisclosed.
ACTIONS
Independent veterinary practices
- Review chronic medication and prescription diet records for last fill source and next refill date this month.
- Track outside pharmacy refill requests and first-fill completion weekly.
Corporate veterinary groups and clinic consolidators
- Measure prescription retention by drug class and market monthly.
- Set refill-routing standards for chronic medications within 30 days.
Distributors, e-retail and home delivery providers
- Create one report field for subscription orders and one for customer-level Autoship sales this month.
- Track authorization delays by pharmacy channel weekly.
Manufacturers and commercial operators
- List products sold through Chewy, clinic pharmacies, and home delivery this quarter.
- Request chronic-product refill start and completion counts from accounts this quarter.
4. Elanco vaccine approval adds Lyme-leptospirosis option
OBSERVED
Elanco announced on June 15, 2026, that the U.S. Department of Agriculture approved TruCan Ultra Lyme-L4. Elanco described the product as a one-half mL combination vaccine for Lyme disease and leptospirosis in dogs. Elanco said the product was expected to begin shipping in the next 30 days. 10
VIEWPOINT
Clinics may need to update vaccine protocols, inventory plans, and staff wording. Groups should decide whether a combined Lyme-leptospirosis option fits current vaccine protocols and local risk patterns.
Track expected shipping separately from actual stocking. Decide who reviews the product before changing client wording.
CONFIDENCE
High — Elanco directly announced the approval and expected shipping window. Stocking, pricing, uptake, and local protocol changes remain open.
ACTIONS
Independent veterinary practices
- Review Lyme and leptospirosis vaccine protocol this month.
- Prepare client-facing staff wording before placing first orders.
Corporate veterinary groups and clinic consolidators
- Set a formulary review owner and due date within 30 days.
- Track sites requesting combination vaccine changes weekly.
Distributors, e-retail and home delivery providers
- Check order timing with supplier contacts this week.
- Prepare customer wording for substitution and backorder questions before the next buying cycle.
Manufacturers and commercial operators
- Update competitive vaccine comparison materials this week.
- Track sales team questions on dose volume and combination options weekly.
5. VEG starts AI note rollout in emergency hospitals
OBSERVED
VetRec and VEG ER for Pets announced on June 11, 2026, that VetRec became VEG’s official AI scribe partner after a six-month pilot. The release said VetRec was live across more than 70% of VEG hospitals and that company-wide rollout was underway. It also said clinicians at initial pilot sites logged more than 100,000 visits. 11
VIEWPOINT
This rollout changes who writes, reviews, corrects, and signs the record. Emergency care has fast notes, many cases, and many handoffs between doctors, technicians, and records.
Groups should define note-review rules, record-quality checks, staff expectations, and what staff should tell clients about AI notes.
CONFIDENCE
Moderate — the rollout claim is direct. Productivity, record quality, and staff impact still need measured evidence.
ACTIONS
Independent veterinary practices
- Test one documentation workflow this month before buying a scribe tool.
- Assign the reviewer for AI-generated draft records this week.
Corporate veterinary groups and clinic consolidators
- Set review rules for AI-generated draft records within 30 days.
- Track record corrections and note completion time monthly.

- Prepare sales team answers on record access, note review, and order handoffs this month.
6. FDA approves generic over-the-counter nitenpyram for fleas
OBSERVED
FDA said on June 10, 2026, that it approved Nitenpyram Tablets for flea infestations in dogs and cats. The approval also covers puppies and kittens that weigh at least two pounds and are at least four weeks old. FDA said this was the first generic approval of nitenpyram tablets for dogs and cats. FDA also said the product has the same active ingredient as Capstar, is bioequivalent to Capstar, is available over the counter, and comes in 11.4 mg and 57 mg tablets. 12
The FDA Freedom of Information summary identifies the approval as ANADA 200-858, sponsored by Felix Pharmaceuticals. It names Capstar as the reference product and says each tablet size is supplied in 6-count and 60-count packages. 13
DailyMed lists Capstar and PetArmor CapAction as nitenpyram tablets. Both labels list 11.4 mg and 57.0 mg tablet strengths. 14, 15
VIEWPOINT
The Felix approval gives clinics a new pricing and stocking choice. Practices that stock Capstar may be able to add Felix, switch some in-clinic use to Felix, or carry both products once Felix is available through distributors.
The margin effect will depend on clinic pricing. If a clinic passes all generic savings to the client with the same markup, profit dollars may fall by comparison. If the clinic sets a higher markup on the lower-cost generic while keeping the client price below Capstar, the client can save money, and the clinic protect margin.
Clients can already compare Capstar with PetArmor CapAction. Felix may add another nitenpyram product to search results and retail listings once it launches. Practices should set the clinic charge, staff wording, and stocking rule before clients ask why prices differ.
Nitenpyram kills adult fleas quickly and is used for short-term flea relief. Staff should connect that answer to ongoing flea prevention, home flea-control steps, and the clinic’s prevention plan.
CONFIDENCE
High — FDA approval and product status are direct. Launch price, distributor availability, clinic acquisition cost, and client response remain open.
ACTIONS
Independent veterinary practices
- Decide whether to stock Capstar, Felix generic nitenpyram, or both before first orders.
- Compare clinic charge, estimated acquisition cost, and online Capstar or CapAction prices before setting Felix pricing.
Corporate veterinary groups and clinic consolidators
- Set group rules for stocking Capstar, Felix generic nitenpyram, or both within 30 days.
- Track nitenpyram price questions, product switches, and gross profit by site monthly.
Distributors, e-retail and home delivery providers
- Check Capstar, PetArmor CapAction, and Felix generic nitenpyram listings and search terms this week.
- Track 6-count and 60-count price gaps weekly once Felix listings appear.
Manufacturers and commercial operators
- Review online price and promotion rules for Capstar, PetArmor CapAction, and Felix generic nitenpyram this month.
- Update sales team messages on adult-flea speed, short product role, same-ingredient comparisons, and clinic margin questions this week.
Early watch item
1. Pet insurance moves into housing and benefits channels
OBSERVED
Odie and Haven announced on June 10, 2026, that they formed a strategic partnership to expand pet insurance access through partner channels outside the clinic. Haven will offer Odie pet insurance through partner channels, including rental housing operators and animal shelters. Haven also said a rental housing partner launched on June 1, 2026, and would make coverage available to about 1.2 million residents nationwide. 16
Adoro Pet Insurance announced on June 10, 2026, that Scott Taylor joined the company as Chief Business Development Officer. The company said Taylor will lead its employee benefits and partner channels. It also said Taylor was most recently President of Spot Pet Insurance. 17
SPECULATIVE ASSESSMENT
These moves may be an early sign that pet insurance is reaching clients before the clinic visit. Clients may hear about coverage while renting, adopting, choosing employee benefits, or using a partner platform.
Enrollment and payment behavior are still unproven. The question is whether clients arrive at check-in with coverage bought elsewhere and different expectations about estimates, claims, reimbursement timing, and direct payment.
CONFIDENCE
Moderate — the company announcements are direct and related. The main uncertainty is whether housing, shelter, employer, and broker channels produce measurable policy enrollment or change how clients pay at the clinic.
WHAT WOULD CONFIRM THIS
- Housing or shelter partners disclose insurance quote starts or enrollments within 90 days.
- Employers or benefit brokers add more pet insurance offers this benefits cycle.
- Clinics report more clients asking insurance questions at check-in or estimate review.
- Insurers update scripts for clinics, shelters, housing partners, or benefit brokers this quarter.
- Practice software systems add clearer insurance status, claim, or reimbursement fields.
WHAT WOULD RULE THIS OUT
- Partner announcements stay limited to awareness, with no enrollment data.
- Employer benefit adoption stays limited to a few one-off programs.
- Clinics see no rise in insurance questions at estimates or checkout.
- Housing and shelter channels leave insurance outside move-in or adoption steps.
- Pet insurance remains mainly a direct-to-consumer marketing channel.
HOW TO PREPARE NOW
Independent veterinary practices
- Record insurance status during new-client intake this month.
- Track insurance questions at estimate review weekly.
Corporate veterinary groups and clinic consolidators
- Standardize one insurance-status intake field within 30 days.
- Review estimate and claim handoff wording this month.
Distributors, e-retail and home delivery providers
- Review customer-facing insurance and payment language this month.
- Track insurance-related support questions monthly.
Manufacturers and commercial operators
- Review savings claims and insurance language before sales teams use them this month.
- Use one forecast line for confirmed enrollments and one for insurance offers this quarter.
