New Products, Prices, and Portals Affect Clinic Follow-Up

|13 min read
Seated female veterinarian discuses exam results with a seated female dog owner while the dog sits at her feet at an independent vet clinic treatment room.

Theme this week

Follow through after a care recommendation is the main pressure this week. New products, price data, settlement reporting, and portal-linked prescriptions all affect the next step after the visit: which option staff explain, which follow-up happens, which estimate is accepted, and where the prescription is filled. Review recommendation, estimate, test follow-up, and refill handoffs now.

New to PULSE? Start here to get more out of PULSE intelligence briefs.

Executive takeaways

  1. Review canine dermatitis treatment steps within 30 days. Befrena gives clinics a new in-clinic injectable option for canine allergic and atopic dermatitis. 1
  2. Send flea and tick rebate, discount, and product listing language for legal or compliance review this month. The reported settlement raises risk around rebates, product listings, search placement, and how easy generic products are to find. 2, 3
  3. Prepare symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) kidney test follow-up steps before June. IDEXX is adding SDMA to common Catalyst test panels for U.S. and Canada customers. 4
  4. Track estimate acceptance weekly. Veterinary services and pet services remain higher inflation categories than pet food and supplies. 5, 6
  5. Track outside refill requests weekly. Chewy Vet Care is linking clinic visits, records, prescriptions, and Chewy pharmacy access through its Pet Portal. 7, 8

Signals

1. Elanco Befrena adds a new in-clinic canine allergy option

OBSERVED

Elanco announced on May 18, 2026 that its phased U.S. launch of Befrena, tirnovetmab, is underway. Elanco describes Befrena as a biologic injection that targets interleukin-31 (IL-31), a protein linked to itch signaling, for canine allergic and atopic dermatitis. The company said select Early Experience Program veterinarians are using it in clinics. Elanco said Befrena enters a $1.3 billion U.S. canine dermatology market. 1

VIEWPOINT

This will change which canine allergy care products clinics stock, explain, and use. An in-clinic injection can affect inventory, appointment flow, how staff explain the option, and recheck timing.

The key decision is which product, or products, the clinic stocks, explains and uses during heavy dispensing allergy season. Practices should prepare for client questions about visit timing, efficacy and cost comparison with current dermatitis care options.

CONFIDENCE

High — supported by direct company release; uptake, pricing, and full supply ramp remain open.

2. Flea and tick settlement raises sales practice review risk

OBSERVED

Indiana Lawyer reported on May 13, 2026 that Elanco and several retailers reached a $9.275 million class action settlement tied to allegations involving Advantix II and Advantage II flea and tick products and generic access. The article reported Elanco’s share as $6.75 million and listed payment amounts for Petco, PetSmart, Chewy, Tractor Supply or Petsense, and PetMeds. 2

Elanco’s first quarter 2026 Form 10-Q says Elanco reached a settlement in principle with the Kraus-Silfen and Spradlin plaintiffs on February 18, 2026. The filing says the proposed settlement remains subject to final settlement documents and court approval. Elanco says the proposed settlement includes no admission of liability. 3

VIEWPOINT

The settlement reporting gives manufacturers and retailers a reason to review flea and tick sales practices. Retailers and manufacturers should review product listings, search placement, how easy generic products are to find, how discounts are offered, promotions, and rebate terms. Operators should review current language, records, and approval steps with legal or compliance teams this month.

CONFIDENCE

Moderate — supported by public reporting and a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing; final court approval and implementation details remain open.

3. IDEXX adds kidney marker to in-clinic test panels

OBSERVED

IDEXX announced on May 19, 2026 that symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), a kidney health marker, will be built into IDEXX Catalyst CLIPs test panels. IDEXX said the change will make kidney function evaluation part of common in-clinic blood chemistry test panels. IDEXX said the update will be available beginning in June to customers in the United States and Canada. The company also said results will appear in VetConnect PLUS with other diagnostic data. 4

IDEXX said it has performed about 119 million SDMA patient tests globally since introducing the IDEXX SDMA Test in 2015. 4

VIEWPOINT

This may make kidney screening more common during routine visits. The key question is what teams do after a kidney risk result. Clinics should track whether results lead to follow-up testing, monitoring visits, kidney diet conversations, or clients delaying or turning down recommended care.

CONFIDENCE

High — supported by direct company release; clinic adoption speed and pricing response remain open.

ACTIONS

Independent veterinary practices

  • Review kidney test follow-up steps before June.
  • Track SDMA follow-up recommendations weekly.

Corporate veterinary groups and clinic consolidators

  • Set one SDMA-use report this month.
  • Compare SDMA follow-up rates by site monthly.

  • Update kidney care field materials before June.
  • Track competitor diagnostic updates this quarter.

4. Higher veterinary prices keep pressure on estimates

OBSERVED

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) April 2026 Consumer Price Index (CPI) Table 2 lists pet services at 6.6% year over year and veterinarian services at 5.5% year over year. 5

Petfood Industry reported on May 15, 2026 that total petflation eased to 3.8% year over year in April. The article reported April segment inflation of 2.2% for pet food, 1.9% for pet supplies, 6.6% for pet services, and 5.5% for veterinary care. It also reported pet prices 33.3% above 2019 levels and 28.2% above 2021 levels. 6

VIEWPOINT

Pet food and supply prices are rising more slowly than veterinary and pet service prices. That makes estimate acceptance a weekly item for clinics to track and a test of whether clients accept the price, delay care, or buy elsewhere.

The key step happens before checkout, when staff explain the estimate. Teams should track whether clients approve, defer, finance, insure, or shift purchases elsewhere after a care recommendation.

CONFIDENCE

High — supported by official CPI category data and pet market interpretation; local price sensitivity will vary by market.

ACTIONS

Independent veterinary practices

  • Track estimate acceptance weekly.
  • Update how staff explain payment choices this week.

Corporate veterinary groups and clinic consolidators

  • Compare invoice growth with visits monthly.
  • Track declined care by category this month.

Distributors, e-retail and home delivery providers

  • Track shifts to store brand products weekly.
  • Review subscription order retention by price band monthly.

Manufacturers and commercial operators

  • Compare the real price after discounts and shipping by sales route this month.
  • Prepare value evidence before the next account review.

Early watch item

1. Financing and insurance workflows may need better records

OBSERVED

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) April 2026 Consumer Price Index (CPI) data list pet services at 6.6% year over year and veterinarian services at 5.5% year over year. Petfood Industry reported April petflation, a pet market inflation measure by Pet Business Professor, at 3.8% year over year. The same article reported pet food at 2.2%, pet supplies at 1.9%, pet services at 6.6%, and veterinary care at 5.5%. 5, 6

Scratch Financial announced on May 13, 2026 that it entered a purchase facility, a funding arrangement that can support more loans, with Victory Park Capital. Scratch helps clinics process payments and offer loans. Scratch also said its platform combines financing, payment processing, and matching payments to clinic records. 9

An American Journal of Veterinary Research (AJVR) article published in May 2026 analyzed Dog Aging Project survey responses from January 1, 2020 through December 31, 2023. The article reports 47,444 dog owner responses and 10,127 insured dogs, equal to 21%. The article says the findings may help veterinarians discuss pet insurance with owners. 10, 11

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) revised Chapter 21B draft gives examiners review procedures for pet insurance marketing and sales, disclosures, waiting periods, wellness program sales practices, and insurance agent training. 12, 13

SPECULATIVE ASSESSMENT

The observations may be an early sign that payment help offered at checkout is becoming a more documented estimate, payment, and insurance process. The first step is the care recommendation. The next steps are the estimate, payment option, insurance discussion, and record of what staff told the client.

The shared step is the estimate conversation. Practices and partners that explain financing, insurance, wellness plans, and waiting period waivers during one client conversation may explain options more clearly and keep better records. They may also face risk of questions during insurer, partner, or regulator review if scripts, websites, or partner steps mix financing, insurance, wellness, and discounts.

CONFIDENCE

Low — component evidence is direct, but the combined process shift remains an inference; confirmation requires clinic adoption, use by state insurance examiners, and measured financing or insurance behavior.

WHAT WOULD CONFIRM THIS

  • Clinic groups add financing and insurance education to estimate standard operating procedures within 90 days.
  • Insurers update waiting period and wellness plan scripts this quarter.
  • State insurance departments adopt or reference the NAIC Chapter 21B draft.
  • Practices track declined care, financing approval, and insurance education monthly.
  • Platforms separate wellness, insurance, and financing language more clearly.

WHAT WOULD RULE THIS OUT

  • Financing stays as a checkout only offer.
  • Insurer and clinic partner scripts remain unchanged this quarter.
  • State insurance exams use broad reviews rather than pet insurance specific checks.
  • Veterinary service inflation eases and declined care rates stop rising.
  • Insurance education stays general across pet owner groups.

HOW TO PREPARE NOW

Independent veterinary practices

  • Track declined care reasons weekly.
  • Review financing and insurance scripts this month.

Corporate veterinary groups and clinic consolidators

  • List who explains the estimate, payment option, and insurance option within 30 days.
  • Measure financing approval and insurance education rates monthly.

Distributors, e-retail and home delivery providers

  • Review insurance and payment partner language this month.
  • Track payment declines and abandoned prescription orders monthly.

Manufacturers and commercial operators

  • Prepare value evidence before the next account review.
  • Send claims that mention insurance, wellness plans, or savings for compliance review this month.
