1. What PETMETRIX data is and is not

1.1 What it is

PETMETRIX provides commercial intelligence for animal health leaders by publishing:

  • PULSE+ Daily E-Retail Intelligence (time-stamped observations of publicly visible retailer signals for a defined product universe)
  • PULSE POLLS (aggregated benchmarking based on voluntary participation)
  • Editorial analysis (market interpretation and execution-oriented commentary)

1.2 What it is not

  • It is not a guarantee of any retailer’s final checkout price, availability, shipping cost, taxes, or promotional eligibility.
  • It is not veterinary medical advice and does not create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR).
  • It is not legal, accounting, or financial advice, and it is not a substitute for your own internal review and decision-making.

2. At-a-glance coverage

2.1 PULSE+ Daily E-Retail Intelligence

Tracked product universe: The “Top 50 pet Rx products” as defined by the PETMETRIX Stock keeping unit (SKU) registry.

Tracked e-retailers:

  • Chewy
  • Amazon
  • Walmart
  • PetSmart
  • 1-800-PetMeds

Core daily signals:

  • Street price (Observed)
  • Auto-ship discount signal (Observed, where displayed)
  • First-time Rx or new-customer discount signal (Observable signal, when publicly visible)
  • Shipping fee policy cues (Observed)

Default offer or “buy box” (prominent box on a product page where customers click "Add to Cart" or "Buy Now) dynamics (Observed, where feasible and observable)

Update cadence: PETMETRIX PULSE+ is designed as a daily decision tool. Our goal is to publish updated outputs daily, after processing and quality checks complete.

“Daily” versus “Real Time”: Daily does not mean real time. PETMETRIX generally publishes one updated set of time-stamped observations per day. We do not provide continuous intraday updates.

Timestamps and time zone: Unless we clearly state otherwise, observation timestamps are displayed in United States Eastern Time.

Coverage changes: Coverage, tracked SKUs, retailer set, and included signals may change as the market changes and as PETMETRIX evolves the product.

3. What “Updated daily” means

“Updated daily” means:

  • PETMETRIX attempts to collect a fresh, time-stamped snapshot of the defined signals for the defined universe on a daily cadence; and
  • PETMETRIX publishes refreshed subscriber outputs after standardization and quality checks complete.

Controlled exceptions: Retailer pages change without notice. If a retailer or a specific signal is temporarily unavailable or not observable during a run, we may mark that data as “Not Observed” (or similar) and publish partial coverage with a clear note. We do not fill missing values with guesses or estimations.

4. Core definitions

PETMETRIX uses “signal” language deliberately. Some fields are Observed values; others are Observable signals that may be displayed inconsistently or may depend on user state (membership, first-order eligibility, etc.).

4.1 Street Price (Observed)

What it is: The publicly displayed product-page price observed at the time of capture.

What it is not: A guaranteed checkout price.

4.2 Auto-ship Discount Signal (Observed, where displayed)

What it is: A publicly displayed discount or pricing mechanic associated with subscribe-and-save or auto-ship when visible at capture time.

What it is not: A guarantee that every customer qualifies or that the discount applies at checkout.

4.3 First-time Rx and New-Customer Discount Signal (Observable signal)

What it is: A promotion shown publicly that appears tied to first-time prescription purchase or new-customer mechanics, when observable.

What it is not: A guaranteed field. Retailers may personalize this offer, show it intermittently, require login, or vary eligibility.

4.4 Shipping Fee Policy Cues (Observed)

What it is: Publicly stated shipping rules that can affect effective price (e.g., “free shipping over $X,” stated shipping fees, or similar cues).

What it is not: A guaranteed landed cost. Shipping can vary by location, membership status, order composition, and retailer policy changes.

4.5 Default Offer and “Buy Box” Dynamics (Observed, where feasible)

What it is: Where a retailer experience makes it observable, PETMETRIX may capture which offer appears to be the default or primary offer at capture time.

What it is not: A complete seller-level or inventory-level audit, and it may not be observable on all retailers or all products.

5. How PETMETRIX collects the data (high-level)

5.1 Source type: publicly accessible pages and displays

PETMETRIX collects signals from publicly accessible retailer pages and related public displays using automated methods.

We cannot control retailer websites. Retailer page structure, displayed fields, promotions, and availability may change at any time.

5.2 No-login or personalized states

To support comparability and reliability, PETMETRIX focuses on publicly observable signals.

We generally do not attempt to capture personalized pricing states (for example, pricing that requires a specific customer login, membership, or individualized coupon eligibility), unless PETMETRIX explicitly introduces that coverage later.

5.3 Service providers

PETMETRIX may use specialized service providers to support reliable daily collection. PETMETRIX retains control over:

  • the SKU registry and coverage,

  • metric definitions,

  • standardization and mapping rules,

  • quality checks and exception rules, and

  • daily publishing of subscriber outputs.

5.4 Time-stamped snapshots

Observations are recorded as time-stamped snapshots to support trend tracking and auditability (for example, to distinguish real market movement from temporary display artifacts).

6. How PETMETRIX processes and presents the data

6.1 Standardization and SKU consistency

Retailers can label products differently. PETMETRIX maps observed listings to its SKU registry (based on product, strength, pack size and other identifiers) to maintain consistent tracking. Mapping is performed on a best-effort basis and may occasionally require correction.

6.2 Charts and trendlines

PULSE+ includes daily chart artifacts and may include trendlines (for example, 7-day and 30-day views) derived from daily snapshots. Trendlines are computed from available observations within the stated window.

6.3 Missing, ambiguous, or conflicting signals

If a value cannot be observed reliably on a given day, PETMETRIX may mark the field as “Not Observed” (or similar) instead of inferring it. In cases where a page displays inconsistent signals (for example, rotating promotions), PETMETRIX may publish the most defensible observed signal and note limitations.

6.4 Currency and tax handling

Unless clearly stated otherwise, prices are presented in United States Dollars (USD) and generally reflect pre-tax displayed prices (sales tax varies materially by jurisdiction and customer context).

7. Known limitations

Retail e-commerce is not a controlled environment. The following factors can cause the price you see to differ from PETMETRIX outputs:

  • Time lag: Retailer pages can change minutes after data capture.
  • Geography and taxes: Pricing display and taxes vary by location.
  • Membership and user state: membership statuslogged-in status, and “first order” eligibility can change offers.
  • Coupons and promos: Coupons, codes, and targeted offers may not be publicly visible.
  • Inventory and availability: Out-of-stock states, substitutions, or fulfillment changes can alter effective price.
  • Marketplace rotation: Seller and default offer and buy box dynamics can change rapidly.
  • A/B testing and user interface changes: Retailers frequently test layouts and promo presentations, which can affect observability.

Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) and policy interpretation note: PETMETRIX may flag movements that are commercially relevant for MAP monitoring. PETMETRIX does not determine whether any pricing violates MAP policy or any law. The user is responsible for interpreting and enforcing their own policies and for obtaining appropriate legal guidance.

8. Quality controls and governance

PETMETRIX applies quality controls designed to keep PULSE+ reliable and commercially defensible, including:

  • Automated checks for missing coverage and unexpected gaps.
  • Monitoring or alerting when a retailer is unavailable or when a signal changes format.
  • A repeatable review cadence for flagged anomalies (for example, potential MAP-relevant movements) to distinguish true market movement from measurement noise.

Methodology changes: PETMETRIX may update definitions, coverage, or calculation logic as the market changes. When changes are material, PETMETRIX will update the Last Updated date and the change log. We may also add a note about trend comparability.

9. PULSE POLLS methodology

9.1 Participation and sample

PULSE POLLS are optional polls offered to PETMETRIX subscribers and other industry participants. Participation is voluntary.

9.2 How results are shown

When PETMETRIX publishes poll results, we aim to include:

  • the poll fielding period,
  • the number of respondents,
  • the segmentation shown (for example, corporate vs. independent; manufacturer vs. distributor), and
  • as feasible based on how results are presented.

9.3 Key limitations

Poll results reflect the views of respondents who chose to participate during the fielding period. Polls may be subject to non-representative sampling and response bias, and some subgroups may be small.

PULSE POLLS outputs should be treated as directional benchmarking signals, not definitive population statistics.

10. Intended use and prohibited use

PETMETRIX is designed for internal commercial decision support (for example, MAP monitoring, channel strategy, negotiation preparation, and market interpretation). You may not use PETMETRIX to facilitate price-fixing, bid-rigging, market allocation, unlawful information exchanges, or other anti-competitive conduct. See the PETMETRIX Terms of Service for additional restrictions.

11. Third-party trademarks and non-affiliation

Retailer names and trademarks are the property of their respective owners. PETMETRIX is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any retailer referenced in our coverage.

PETMETRIX may reference third-party sources in editorial content. Those sources remain the property of their respective owners, and PETMETRIX is not responsible for third-party content or availability.

FAQs

What does “street pricing” mean?

Street pricing is the publicly visible, consumer-facing price and promotion context on retailer sites at the time of observation. It is different from your internal net price or contracted terms.

How often is the chart updated?

PULSE+ operates on a daily update cycle. Exact timing can vary based on retailer site changes and monitoring processes.

Do you capture every promotion and discount?

Not always. Some promotions may be personalized, location-based, or otherwise not publicly visible. We publish caveats and definitions to help interpret what’s shown.

Is this a replacement for VetSource/PIMS data?

No. Transaction systems show volume and internal performance. PULSE+ adds external market context on a daily update cycle (street pricing, visible offers, buy‑box dynamics) to inform decisions.
