Theme this week
Clinics and commercial teams have near-term work on New World screwworm triage, product records, client scripts, and product page claims. At the same time, revenue is still positive in key benchmarks, but clients, patients, invoices, visits, and product units need separate tracking. Update triage steps and product records now, and measure revenue apart from patient and unit flow this week.
New to PULSE? Start here to get more out of PULSE intelligence briefs.
Executive takeaways
- Update screwworm triage steps this week. Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updates create new clinic questions about wounds, travel history, reporting, product status, and what clients must be told. 1, 2, 3, 4
- Review pimobendan records before generic questions rise. Cronus launched a pimobendan generic, so clinics and distributors need to check product records, brand-versus-generic rules, stock, and client scripts. 5, 6
- Track revenue apart from patients and units weekly. VetWatch shows revenue up while clients, patients, invoices, visits, or product purchases are down or softer. The same pattern was reported in the June 4, 2026 PULSE Edition. 7, 8, 9
- Update diet and nutrition scripts this month. Hill’s added kidney and skin or stomach diet options, Open Farm’s PetSmart rollout may increase retail nutrition questions, and Elanco’s survey supports watching owner spend intent without assuming product switching. 10, 11, 12, 13
- Review sevoflurane purchasing terms before the next order. Parnell added a sevoflurane option, so clinics and groups need to check item setup, reorder points, purchasing terms, and approved product lists. 14
Signals
1. New World screwworm reaches clinic triage
OBSERVED
USDA APHIS confirmed New World screwworm in the United States on June 3, 2026, after larvae were found in the umbilical area of a 3-week-old calf in Zavala County, Texas. APHIS said New World screwworm affects livestock, pets, wildlife, and, less commonly, people and birds. 1
On June 9, APHIS said a new calf case in La Salle County, Texas, brought the reported U.S. case count to 5. APHIS said quick detection, treatment, and reporting are important to protect livestock, wildlife, and pets. 2
APHIS changed the reported location of a dog case from Andrews County, Texas, where it was reported by a veterinarian, to Lea County, New Mexico, because the dog lives in New Mexico. 3
FDA told veterinarians that New World screwworm products include special FDA product statuses: conditional approvals and emergency use authorizations. For emergency use products, FDA listed duties such as telling clients the product status, keeping records, following product use rules, and reporting adverse events. 4
VIEWPOINT
This now affects small animal clinics, not only livestock operations. The work changes at the front desk, triage questions, wound checks, travel history, who staff contact, how they report a suspect case, and what product claims teams can use.
Clinics should update scripts without asking staff to interpret regulations. Manufacturers and distributors should separate emergency use product facts from claims the FDA source does not support.
CONFIDENCE
High — APHIS and FDA are primary regulatory sources. Case counts may change as testing continues.
ACTIONS
Independent veterinary practices
- Add wound, visible larvae/maggot, and recent travel prompts to phone and intake forms this week.
- Add travel, livestock or wildlife contact, and recent animal movement fields to suspect case notes now.
Corporate veterinary groups and clinic consolidators
- Approve one New World screwworm triage script for phone, intake, and exam room use this week.
- Assign one staff lead to check APHIS and FDA updates twice weekly and update scripts when guidance changes.
Distributors, e-retail and home delivery providers
- Check every product listing, flyer, and sales email against FDA status language before posting.
- Create a routing rule that sends emergency use product questions to pharmacy leads this week.
Manufacturers and commercial operators
- Check sales sheets, call scripts, and product pages against FDA authorization language now.
- Prepare a one-page route for adverse event reports and complaints this week.
2. Cronus pimobendan generic adds a new heart drug choice
OBSERVED
Cronus Pharma announced Pimobendan Chewable Tablets for the U.S. veterinary market, available after June 9, 2026. Cronus described the product as the first FDA-approved bioequivalent of Vetmedin and said it is available through national and regional distributors. 5
The product is supplied as half-scored chewable tablets in 1.25 mg, 2.5 mg, 5 mg, and 10 mg strengths, with 50 tablets per bottle. It is approved under Abbreviated New Animal Drug Application (ANADA) 200-728. 5, 6
FDA’s public approval summary for ANADA 200-728 lists Pimomedin, pimobendan chewable tablets for dogs, as a generic version of Vetmedin. The indication is for congestive heart failure due to clinical myxomatous mitral valve disease or dilated cardiomyopathy. 6
VIEWPOINT
This creates the first FDA-approved generic equivalent to one of the most prescribed cardiac drugs in companion animal vet practices.
The Cronus statement was not clear on whether the product will be sold exclusively to vet clinics, or if it will also reach Chewy, Amazon, Costco, and other large retailer pharmacies. This sales channel question is important for clinic dispensing margin and how clients first encounter the generic. Vet-exclusive distribution should not be assumed until Cronus, or Distributors, confirm it.
Clinics also need to decide how they will record, stock, and discuss the generic. The work includes medicine lists, product records, rules for using the generic, client questions, distributor stock, and gross margin. Practices should decide how staff answer generic questions before the first client asks. Commercial teams should check whether sales materials and account responses match the approved product record.
CONFIDENCE
High — the launch statement and FDA approval record align. Local distributor stock timing may vary.
ACTIONS
Independent veterinary practices
- Check pimobendan product records in inventory, PIMS, and online pharmacy tools this week.
- Provide staff with key product facts and talking points for pet owners on brand-versus-generic, price, and supply questions now.
Corporate veterinary groups and clinic consolidators
- Set group rules for how sites record, stock, and discuss brand-versus-generic pimobendan within 30 days.
- Track brand-versus-generic pimobendan use by site monthly.
Distributors, e-retail and home delivery providers
- Confirm stock status and backorder rules for each pimobendan strength this week.
- Create or update item records for all pimobendan strengths before launch orders begin.
Manufacturers and commercial operators
- Rank top branded pimobendan accounts by generic switch risk this month.
- Update sales team FAQ answers on price, supply, and brand-versus-generic questions this week.
3. VetWatch shows revenue up while patients fall
OBSERVED
Animalytix reported VetWatch revenue through the week ending June 6, 2026. Revenue was 2.4% higher year to date than in the same 2025 period across about 3,000 reporting practices. Animalytix also said revenue growth was positive across all 9 U.S. Census divisions. 7
Animalytix also reported that year-to-date product purchasing was down through April 30 across 32,000-plus practices and shelter locations in the Animalytix Marketplace. 7
- Core and lifestyle canine and feline vaccine purchases were down 3.8%.
- Surgery supplies were down 0.3%.
- Kennel cough vaccine purchases were down 7.4%.
- Parasite-control product purchases were down 1.1%.
- Chronic care products were up 2.7%.
Antelligence’s June 9 Fountain Briefing listed VetWatch industry indicators showing year-to-date revenue up 2.4%, unique clients down 1.9%, invoices down 2.5%, and unique patients down 2.4%. 8
The PETMETRIX PULSE June 4, 2026 edition (2026-W23) reported the same pattern for May: revenue was up while visits, clients, or patients were down. The edition cited Antelligence’s May 29 VetWatch Operating Index, which listed clients down 2.0%, invoices down 2.6%, patients down 2.5%, and revenue up 2.3% year over year. Vetsource summaries for the 5 weeks ending May 30 were also cited as showing revenue per practice up every week and visits down every week. 9
VIEWPOINT
This is a continuing demand quality signal: revenue is rising, but fewer clients, visits, or patients may be moving through clinics. Some product purchase measures are also weaker.
Operators should not treat revenue growth as a recovery in visits, or patients, until visits, clients, invoices, and product units also improve. Higher than normal price increases for pet essentials like food, vet care and Rx has been the primary driver of revenue growth. Broader service mix, advanced diagnostics, and confirmed billing for all services delivered are all factors impacting practice profits.
CONFIDENCE
Moderate — the pattern now appears in evidence across two PETMETRIX PULSE editions, with VetWatch, Antelligence, Vetsource, and Animalytix indicators showing the same broad pattern. The main uncertainty is cause, including price, mix, margin, follow-up, and local market variation.
ACTIONS
Independent veterinary practices
- Compare revenue, visits, invoices, patients, and gross margin weekly.
- Track vaccine doses, parasite control units, and chronic-care refill compleetions this month.
Corporate veterinary groups and clinic consolidators
- Measure how much growth came from price versus more patients this month.
- Create a weekly exception list of sites where revenue rises while patient count falls.
Distributors, e-retail and home delivery providers
- Compare account revenue reports, where available, with unit orders weekly.
- Track vaccine and parasite control product purchasing by account this month.
Manufacturers and commercial operators
- Review account forecasts against unit orders now.
- Add two account call questions like: “Are units up or only revenue?” and “Are patients up or only price or mix?”
4. Hill’s adds prescription diets for kidney and skin or stomach needs
OBSERVED
Hill’s Pet Nutrition announced Prescription Diet k/d + Derm Complete for dogs and Prescription Diet k/d + z/d Hydrolyzed for cats on June 9, 2026. Hill’s said both products are available when a veterinarian recommends them and are designed for pets with kidney issues alongside skin or gastrointestinal sensitivities. 10
Hill’s said the dog and cat products are available in dry and wet food. 10
VIEWPOINT
This adds a veterinary recommended diet choice for pets with more than one diet need. Teams need to explain why the diet was recommended and how the client should reorder it. Clinics should update diet lists and home delivery product listings before clients receive different reorder instructions.
CONFIDENCE
High — the launch, product names, and access path are reported by Hill’s. Uptake will depend on veterinary recommendation and client acceptance.
ACTIONS
Independent veterinary practices
- Update diet lists and discharge templates this week.
- Check home delivery listings and reorder links before recommending the diet.
Corporate veterinary groups and clinic consolidators
- Provide one document for all staff with key messages approved for explaining which pets the diet is for and how clients reorder it within 30 days.
- Track diet recommendations and reorder completion for pets with more than one diet need monthly.
Distributors, e-retail and home delivery providers
- Verify product setup and reorder instructions this week.
- Track search and fulfillment issues for the new Hill’s diet items monthly.
Manufacturers and commercial operators
- Prepare comparison notes against your therapeutic diet claims and account questions this month.
- Prepare account call questions about cases with kidney plus skin or digestive needs this week.
5. Open Farm reaches PetSmart shelves
OBSERVED
Open Farm and PetSmart announced an expansion that brings Open Farm dry food, wet food, fresh meals, freeze dried raw food, treats, and supplements into nearly 1,700 PetSmart stores in the United States and Canada and online. 11, 12
The move also puts Open Farm recipes in more than 9,500 retail locations across North America. 11, 12
VIEWPOINT
This changes where clients can buy the brand. It does not change veterinary therapeutic diet recommendations directly.
More premium nutrition and supplement products on PetSmart shelves may increase client questions about where ingredients come from, how claims are supported, supplements, and price.
Clinics should use simple comparison language that does not overstate either option. Manufacturers and online sellers should expect more comparisons between clinic recommendations and PetSmart shelf options.
CONFIDENCE
High — store count and product categories are directly reported. The open question is how many clients buy the products or ask clinics about them.
ACTIONS
Independent veterinary practices
- Add a short script for comparing retail diets with clinic recommendations this week.
- Log the top 5 retail nutrition products clients ask about each week.
Corporate veterinary groups and clinic consolidators
- Standardize scripts for comparing retail diets with clinic recommendations within 30 days.
- Review supplement language in scripts, website copy, and call center answers for unsupported claims this month.
Distributors, e-retail and home delivery providers
- Compare premium nutrition product mix against PetSmart’s shelf mix this month.
- Track search terms for Open Farm and other premium ingredient transparency brands weekly.
Manufacturers and commercial operators
- Map which product items now compete with PetSmart Open Farm listings this month.
- Prepare account ready evidence points for ingredient sources and nutrition claims now.
6. Parnell adds sevoflurane option for dog anesthesia
OBSERVED
Parnell announced the launch of Sevoflurane Inhalation Anesthetic on June 3, 2026. Parnell said the product is indicated for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia in dogs and is available in 250 mL bottles. 14
VIEWPOINT
This adds another product clinics can consider when buying anesthesia products. Clinics need to check product setup, purchasing terms, reorder timing, and whether each site chooses products or the group chooses one list for all sites.
This affects fewer clinics than the pimobendan launch but is still useful for purchasing reviews this month.
CONFIDENCE
High — the product launch, indication, and bottle size are directly stated. Account pricing and how many clinics buy it remain unclear.
ACTIONS
Independent veterinary practices
- Review anesthesia inventory and reorder points this month.
- Compare sevoflurane purchasing terms before the next order.
Corporate veterinary groups and clinic consolidators
- Check which anesthesia products each site currently uses and may order this month.
- Decide whether each site chooses anesthesia products or the group sets one approved list now.
Distributors, e-retail and home delivery providers
- Update sevoflurane item records this week.
- Track demand for inhaled anesthesia products by account monthly.
Manufacturers and commercial operators
- Update sales sheet comparison for how sevoflurane fits your anesthesia product line this month.
- Prepare account call questions about product setup, stock, and reorder timing now.
Early watch items
1. Nutrition launches may need clearer claim proof
OBSERVED
Hill’s Pet Nutrition announced Prescription Diet k/d + Derm Complete for dogs and Prescription Diet k/d + z/d Hydrolyzed for cats on June 9, 2026. Hill’s said the products are available when a veterinarian recommends them and are designed for pets with kidney issues alongside skin or gastrointestinal sensitivities. 10
Open Farm and PetSmart announced on June 8, 2026, that Open Farm dry food, wet food, fresh meals, freeze dried raw food, treats, and supplements would be available in nearly 1,700 PetSmart stores in the United States and Canada and online. Open Farm said the move puts its recipes in more than 9,500 retail locations across North America. 11, 12
Elanco said its May 29-31 survey of 1,409 U.S. pet owners found that 91% maintained or increased pet health and wellness spending. Elanco also said 95% saw pet health and wellness as a priority they would not reduce because of economic pressure. 13
SPECULATIVE ASSESSMENT
These launches and survey results may raise the number of client questions about diet choice, evidence for claims, where ingredients come from, supplements, and price. Staff may need clearer answers, not proof of immediate product switching.
This continues prior PETMETRIX PULSE early watch items from April 23, 2026 (2026-W17) and May 7, 2026 (2026-W19) editions, which flagged premium pet food claim proof, supplement proof, therapeutic nutrition documentation, product pages, and retailer claim support files as early pressure points. 15, 16
This is not evidence that premium diets sold in stores will replace veterinary therapeutic diets. The early pattern is that more nutrition choices may require clearer scripts, better claim evidence files, and cleaner reorder instructions.
CONFIDENCE
Low — the launch and survey facts are clear, and prior PULSE editions support the claim-proof pattern. Client behavior, switching, search lift, and reorder movement are still not measured.
WHAT WOULD CONFIRM THIS
- Clinic question logs or call center notes show more questions comparing retail diets with therapeutic diets.
- Online sellers see more searches for Open Farm, supplements, and kidney diets.
- Retailers ask brands for more product claim evidence during line reviews or account calls this quarter.
- Brands add clearer evidence about ingredient sources, studies, or veterinary support online.
WHAT WOULD RULE THIS OUT
- Clinic question logs do not change this month.
- Therapeutic diet recommendations and reorders stay stable.
- Retail product mix changes do not change search patterns or sales mix.
- Brands and retailers do not change nutrition claim language.
HOW TO PREPARE NOW
Independent veterinary practices
- Update simple language for comparing retail diets with veterinary therapeutic diets this week.
- Save one source dated evidence point for each recommended diet in the staff folder now.
Corporate veterinary groups and clinic consolidators
- Standardize scripts for retail-versus-therapeutic diet questions across sites within 30 days.
- Review clinic websites, discharge templates, and call center answers for unsupported diet or supplement claims this month.
Distributors, e-retail and home delivery providers
- Check product pages for claim source, ingredient source language, and supplement wording this month.
- Track searches for premium and therapeutic diets weekly.
Manufacturers and commercial operators
- Review nutrition and supplement evidence files now.
- Prepare answers about ingredient sources and claim evidence before account calls this week.
