Theme this week
More companies are shaping what happens after the vet visit. Clinic data, outside pharmacy options, prescribing software, cat diabetes guidance, and retail supplement launches all affect who gives the next instruction, answers the next client question, or receives the next order. Operators should review follow-up steps now across prescriptions, lab results, diabetes instructions, and supplement questions.

Executive takeaways
- Map each after-visit step this week. The main pressure sits after the exam or client question, where data, retail, pharmacy, protocol, and software paths meet. 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
- Review care recommendations based on clinic data this month. Mars Biobank shows how wellness visits, lab results, owner information, and stored samples may support more specific breed-risk, screening, nutrition, and follow-up advice. 1, 2
- Track outside prescription requests weekly. Rural King added a PetMeds-powered pharmacy option, and Instinct users can send Mixlab prescriptions inside clinic software. 4, 5
- Update cat diabetes and supplement answers within 30 days. AAHA guidance and Petco launches may raise client questions about monitoring, medication, diet, joint support, and calming products. 6, 7, 8
- Monitor software tools built into clinic systems monthly. Mixlab–Instinct, a dental disease risk model, and Pawsible’s startup group suggest more clinic tasks may move into software. 5, 9, 10, 11
Signals
1. Mars Biobank strengthens clinic-data control
OBSERVED
Mars published on April 27, 2026 an article sharing insights from the first 2,000 dogs enrolled in the MARS PETCARE BIOBANK™. Mars described the program as the largest real-world research program into pet health. 1
BMC Veterinary Research published the related first-cohort profile on March 20, 2026, covering enrollment from March 2022 to December 2024. The paper says dogs were recruited through Mars Veterinary Health hospitals, including VCA, Banfield, and BluePearl, across 21 U.S. states. It says 93% of the first 2,000 dogs were recruited during preventive-care appointments at 52 primary-care hospitals. The study records annual visit data, gathers owner information, collects blood, banks samples, and links electronic medical-record and laboratory data. 2
The 'BMC Table 1’ in the Mars article lists Labrador Retriever at 4.7%, Golden Retriever at 3.8%, and Poodle at 3.1%. It conflicts with accompanying text in the article, which lists Labrador Retriever and Golden Retriever at 2.7% and 2.4%. 1, 2, 3
VIEWPOINT
Mars is using wellness visits to build proof that may make risk advice more specific by breed, age, lab result, diet history, and follow-up. The business pressure point is the care recommendation: clinics, networks, and suppliers with better proof can give screening, nutrition, monitoring, and follow-up advice that clients are more likely to trust.
The pressure will appear when clients, clinic networks, or suppliers bring claims tied to breed risk and long-term data into wellness visits. Clinics that know their own patient mix, explain flagged lab results clearly, and show where evidence came from can protect client trust and keep the next care step with the practice.
CONFIDENCE
High — Mars and BMC directly support the release, recruitment path, data links, and cohort profile. Exact breed percentages carry Moderate reuse confidence because Mars text, Mars graphic, and BMC Table 1 conflict on selected values.

2. PetMeds and Rural King bring pet prescriptions into farm and home stores
OBSERVED
On April 22, 2026, PetMed Express said its PetMeds business partnered with Rural King to launch a pet pharmacy service in Rural King stores and online. PetMeds said it will provide pharmacy systems, licensed pharmacists, and e-commerce capabilities. PetMeds also described the deal as its first large-scale retailer-branded pharmacy service powered by PetMeds. 4
Rural King operates 150 stores in 17 states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. 4
VIEWPOINT
This gives Rural King a way to send pet owners to a PetMeds-run pharmacy before the vet clinic manages the refill. The key change is where the customer gets sent: Rural King can direct customers to a PetMeds-powered pharmacy path for prescriptions, flea/tick or heartworm preventives, and other pet health products.
Vet clinics may receive more requests to approve prescriptions from outside pharmacies when local clients use Rural King’s pharmacy option. PetMeds also gains a model it can reuse with other retailers in coming months.
CONFIDENCE
High — PetMeds directly stated the partnership, its pharmacy role, and the retailer-branded model. It is still unclear how many local customers will use it repeatedly.
ACTIONS

3. Instinct–Mixlab puts prescription ordering inside clinic software
OBSERVED
On April 22, 2026 Instinct Science published that Mixlab and Instinct launched a built-in connection between Mixlab’s veterinary pharmacy and Instinct’s cloud-based clinic management software. The integration lets Instinct users browse Mixlab’s pharmacy catalog, send prescriptions without leaving Instinct, and receive prescription status updates in real time. Instinct said the integration is available immediately to Instinct customers nationwide. 5
VIEWPOINT
This moves the pharmacy handoff into the software that hospital teams already use. That can reduce duplicate data entry, make prescription status easier to see, and make teams less likely to switch pharmacy partners once the process becomes routine.
The key decision point is what happens to the prescription after the exam. Operators should measure whether ordering inside clinic software improves speed, reduces missed handoffs, or sends more completed prescriptions to the built-in pharmacy partner.
CONFIDENCE
High — the integration features and availability are directly stated by Instinct. The main uncertainty is how widely different types of hospitals use it.
ACTIONS
Independent veterinary practices
- Review each step used to enter prescriptions this month.
- Track time from exam to prescription submission weekly.
Corporate veterinary groups and clinic consolidators
- Standardize criteria for evaluating pharmacy software integrations across sites within 30 days.

- Update field-team questions about prescription workflows before the next sales call cycle.
4. AAHA feline diabetes guideline requires clinics to review cat diabetes protocols
OBSERVED
The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) published its 2026 Diabetes Management Guidelines for Cats on April 26, 2026. AAHA said the guideline provides step-by-step guidance on diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring. The guideline covers treatment, diet, monitoring, complications, remission, and client education. 6
AAHA’s “3 Takeaways” include high blood glucose over time for diagnosis, avoiding repeated in-hospital blood glucose checks for cats, and carefully choosing cats before using a Sodium-Glucose Transport 2 (SGLT2) Inhibitor. 6
VIEWPOINT
This is a signal for clinics to review their cat diabetes process. Primary-care teams now have new cat diabetes guidance that affects diagnosis, monitoring, medication discussions, diet conversations, and owner education.
The business risk is inconsistent staff training. Clinics and groups should review whether their current cat diabetes workflow matches the new guideline before staff give mixed instructions to clients.
CONFIDENCE
High — the guideline is published by AAHA, and the major topics are visible on the guideline page. How quickly clinics apply the guideline is still uncertain.
ACTIONS
Independent veterinary practices
- Review cat diabetes protocols this month.
- Update client instructions before the next diagnosed cat diabetes case.
Corporate veterinary groups and clinic consolidators
- Standardize the review process for cat diabetes protocols across sites within 30 days.
- Track guideline training completion by site this quarter.
Distributors, e-retail and home delivery providers
- Review demand for diabetes-monitoring supplies this month.
- Track monthly orders for cat diabetes products.
Manufacturers and commercial operators
- Check feline diabetes education materials against the guideline this month.
- Prepare answers to frequently asked questions for field teams before the next education cycle.
5. Petco supplement launches expand Petco’s over-the-counter pet wellness products
OBSERVED
Wuffes announced on April 27, 2026, that its products became available through Petco. Wuffes said its Hip & Joint Chews and Joint Liquid are available in more than 1,400 Petco stores, while other supplements are available in 180 selected stores with a broader rollout planned for summer 2026. 7
Kradle announced on April 24, 2026, that its dog calming products launched at Petco. Kradle said pet owners can find the brand in 1,300 Petco stores, with more products online at Petco.com. 8
VIEWPOINT
Petco is giving more shelf space to brands that started by selling directly to pet owners. The categories are important because joint health, calming, skin, digestion, and mobility often come up during vet visits.
The practical issue is what clinics tell clients. Clinics should expect more owner questions about over-the-counter supplements bought through specialty retail, while brands and retailers should monitor the evidence behind product claims, which products are placed on shelves, and whether customers buy the products again.
CONFIDENCE
High for launch and stated store counts; Moderate for commercial performance — availability is clear, while sales after products reach stores and whether customers buy the products again remain unproven.
ACTIONS
Independent veterinary practices
- Update staff answers about supplements this week.
- Track mobility and calming questions weekly.
Corporate veterinary groups and clinic consolidators
- Standardize supplement guidance across sites within 30 days.
- Measure supplement question trends by category monthly.
Distributors, e-retail and home delivery providers
- Compare supplement assortments with Petco’s assortment this month.
- Track searches for joint and calming products weekly.
Manufacturers and commercial operators
- Check which products face Petco shelf competition this month.
- Review evidence behind product claims before the next account meeting.
Early watch item
1. Built-in software tools could take over clinic handoffs.
OBSERVED
Instinct Science published on April 22, 2026 that Mixlab and Instinct launched a native pharmacy integration for veterinary hospitals. The integration lets Instinct users browse Mixlab’s catalog, submit prescriptions inside Instinct, and receive prescription status updates in real time. 5
Frontiers in Veterinary Science published an April 23, 2026 article on a canine periodontal disease risk model using a hybrid causal Bayesian network. The model integrated data from 9.5 million electronic health records, 2,600 owner questionnaires, prior studies, and expert input. Waltham Petcare Science Institute promoted the model the same day as an AI-supported risk assessment for earlier canine periodontal disease prediction and more tailored preventive-care conversations. 9, 10
Pawsible Ventures announced its first pet-health cohort on April 23, 2026. The group includes companies across veterinary infrastructure, diagnostics, AI-enabled care, preventive health, and consumer wellness. Named companies include VetHubRx for electronic prescribing, NerveX (NxVET) for AI-enabled clinical data capture, Charlie Pet Health for preventive health tracking, and PupPilot for AI front-office workflow. 11
SPECULATIVE ASSESSMENT
These moves could show a shift from separate tools to software built into daily clinic systems. The key issue is which system controls what happens after staff enter a prescription, risk score, or client message. The common handoff steps are prescription submission, status updates, risk scoring, capturing vital signs, front-desk communications, and tracking preventive care tasks and reminders.
The evidence makes this worth tracking. The events are real, but evidence is still early on how widely clinics use these tools, whether the tools save money or increase revenue, which system controls each step, who controls and protects the data, and whether integrations keep working overtime. Operators should track where staff still leave the main clinic system to retype, fax, call, or check status, and which platforms make clinics less likely to switch later.
CONFIDENCE
Low — the events are related and sourced. It is unclear whether many clinics will adopt these tools, whether systems will work together, and whether the tools will show measurable value.
WHAT WOULD CONFIRM THIS
- More prescription vendors add built-in connections to clinic software over the next 90 days.
- Risk models move into clinic software or wellness plans this quarter.
- Corporate groups report faster prescription completion or fewer manual steps such as retyping, calls, or portal checks.
- Startup companies announce paid customers, pilot programs, or distribution partners.
WHAT WOULD RULE THIS OUT
- Fax, portals, and phone calls remain common for the next 90 days.
- Risk models stay in papers and press releases for two quarters.
- Clinic teams report low staff use or high integration burden.
- Investors shift toward wellness products sold directly to pet owners.
HOW TO PREPARE NOW
Independent veterinary practices
- List prescription, dental, and front-desk steps that leave the main clinic system this month.
- Track manual re-entry and status-check calls weekly.
Corporate veterinary groups and clinic consolidators
- Set rules for choosing software integrations within 30 days.
- Compare how hard each workflow would be to move away from this quarter.
Distributors, e-retail and home delivery providers
- Review gaps in partner software integrations this quarter.
- Track prescription-status service tickets weekly.
Manufacturers and commercial operators
- Identify products affected by manual clinic handoffs this month.
- Prepare evidence summaries for software workflow partners this quarter.
